The trail is relatively new, although it was originally conceived in the 1950s.

I went for a walk with my family and an os map, did about 3 miles of the cotswold way, then lost the path then realised no one new how to read a map turned round, went home. Rubbish. Do you know what I found? You have to understand the symbols on the map which are given on the inside of the cover. You have to have a compass or know how to work out which way is north from the position of the sun at the particular time of day. You have to know where you are initially on the map and where you want to get to and you need to be able to distinguish features on the map and identify them with actual features in the landscape around you. You were obviously never a boy scout but never mind. I am sure that if you go to a decent shop that sells Ordnance Survey maps they will have some kind of booklet that explains how to use them. I was a boy scout 46 years ago and have never forgotten how to read and use an OS map of any kind.

The Cotswolds is the perfect destination for short breaks focused on lots of walking thanks to the region’s spectacular scenery.

Over 3,000 miles of walking paths can be enjoyed by visitors to the area, with plenty in the way of self catering cottages and other accommodation to choose from.

Keen walkers will love the huge variety of routes on offer – several long-distance trails run through the Cotswolds, while there is plenty of potential for countless shorter walks across the region.

The main path here is the Cotswold Way, which runs from Chipping Campden to Bath and offers amazing views of the hills in the area as well as the Severn Vale along its more than 100 miles.

If you’re fascinated by British history, the Macmillan Way might be of interest. The 290-mile route passes through the Cotswolds on its way from Dorset to Lincolnshire and traces the path taken by Charles II when he sought to escape Parliamentary forces after the Battle of Worcester in 1651.

Elsewhere, the Oxfordshire Way runs for 65 miles and is ideal if you want to take in not one but two areas of outstanding beauty – the Cotswolds and the Chilterns.

Between Chepstow and Tewkesbury lies the 100-mile Gloucestershire Way, while other routes include the smaller Wardens’ Way and Windrush Way, which link up with the Oxfordshire Way.

Whichever path you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the opportunity to see some of England’s finest countryside on your travels.

The routes available cater even for those not used to long distance walking, as there is scope to trek short stretches of each path as opposed to travelling their entire length.

National Trail has developed several routes along the Cotswold Way that are no longer than six miles each, for example, allowing visitors to explore local market towns, villages and areas of historic interest without getting too tired.

Just a few of these include The Cleeve Hill Ring walk across hilltops and through woodlands, as well as a four-mile amble around Cranham Coopers and the Beechwoods, where you can find out more about the quaint tradition of cheese rolling after exploring beautiful beech woodlands.
